Open Competition
Our Club Chair, Robin Wharfe, writes:
We did it again! The club should be very proud following our second ever Mixed Doubles Competition on Saturday 26th July.
Following last year’s inaugural event, this year’s was just as, if not, better than last year. For a start we were blessed with fine weather from the off and the matches got under way on time, with 7 couples from the club amongst the 32 entries, with some great local bowlers returning this year, and with some new faces.
3 of our couples, Vera and and John, Martin and Louise and Robin and Julie progressed to the second round, with Martin and Louise getting through to one of the semi finals.
The weather stayed fine and competitors, friends, family members and other supporters enjoyed a day of excellent bowling with some close games.
The semi finals were fought out between Will and Alex Harrison and Sam and Lesley Blackstone, with Will and Alex wining through to the final. The other game saw Martin and Louise Tomlinson fall to David Platt and Linda Valentine.
An excellent final rounded off a great day’s bowling with Will and Alex maintaining the momentum for most of the game. David and Linda fought back in the last few ends to ensure a close finish with Will and Alex coming out on top, winning 21 – 19.
Martin concluded a great day for the club by thanking our sponsors, Willacy’s, Drew Ford, No.3 Curry House and Panararmer, the green team, John Smith for putting together the programme and keeping the score sheet running, the markers and scorers, and everyone who provided refreshments for another top spread, and all those who helped in the kitchen and run the raffle.
He then presented Will and Alex with their prizes and trophies.
Well done to everyone. Many favourable comments were received throughout the day, and since, with requests that we hold another competition next year.
On the left below you can see Linda and David, the runners-up, receiving their prize, and on the right is Martin awarding the semi-finalist prize to himself and Louise.
