July Round Robin

July Round Robin

On Sunday July 27th sixteen club members took part in the July Round Robin. As he introduced the event John Smith once again gave a prediction – that tea would be taken at 3.10pm. As you can see from the photo on the right at precisely 3.10pm Vera was enjoying a chocolate éclair with her tea.

At the end of the afternoon Susan and Robin, on the left below, were the winners, while Margaret and George, on the right, took home the booby prize.

Thanks once again to John Smith for organising a pleasant afternoon of friendly bowling. If you click on the photos below they will open in a carousel.

Open Competition 2025

Open Competition

Our Club Chair, Robin Wharfe, writes:

We did it again! The club should be very proud following our second ever Mixed Doubles Competition on Saturday 26th July.

Following last year’s inaugural event, this year’s was just as, if not, better than last year. For a start we were blessed with fine weather from the off and the matches got under way on time, with 7 couples from the club amongst the 32 entries, with some great local bowlers returning this year, and with some new faces.

3 of our couples, Vera and and John, Martin and Louise and Robin and Julie progressed to the second round, with Martin and Louise getting through to one of the semi finals.

The weather stayed fine and competitors, friends, family members and other supporters enjoyed a day of excellent bowling with some close games.

The semi finals were fought out between Will and Alex Harrison and Sam and Lesley Blackstone, with Will and Alex wining through to the final. The other game saw Martin and Louise Tomlinson fall to David Platt and Linda Valentine.

An excellent final rounded off a great day’s bowling with Will and Alex maintaining the momentum for most of the game. David and Linda fought back in the last few ends to ensure a close finish with Will and Alex coming out on top, winning 21 – 19.

Martin concluded a great day for the club by thanking our sponsors, Willacy’s, Drew Ford, No.3 Curry House and Panararmer, the green team, John Smith for putting together the programme and keeping the score sheet running, the markers and scorers, and everyone who provided refreshments for another top spread, and all those who helped in the kitchen and run the raffle.

He then presented Will and Alex with their prizes and trophies.

Well done to everyone. Many favourable comments were received throughout the day, and since, with requests that we hold another competition next year.

On the left below you can see Linda and David, the runners-up, receiving their prize, and on the right is Martin awarding the semi-finalist prize to himself and Louise.

Visit to Salts B.C.

VISIT TO SALTS B.C.

Robin, our Club Chair, writes:

On Sunday 20th July, 18 club members and partners paid a return visit to Salts BC, following last year’s successful days bowling at our club.

The day started damp and humid with light drizzle. 14 players were paired off for a morning of fun, competitive, but good quality bowling. The green was big, in good condition but with some quirky marks.

At the end of the morning session, Salts were victors winning 10 games to our 4. Our winners were Martin Tomlinson, 21 – 19, Mike Warwick 21 – 14, Alison Warwick 21 – 18 and Bert Suttie 21 – 20. Well done to Margaret Nelson who fought a tough game to fall short, losing 19 – 21. By the time it got to lunch the weather began to deteriorate and everyone was glad to get off the green for some well deserved refreshments supplied by our hosts.

During lunch the raffle was drawn with some of our own picking up prizes and Robin thanked Martin, Salts Captain, for their hospitality, friendship and fun bowling. A donation was handed over towards their cost of their refreshments. Martin, in return, thanked us for the visiting their club, and hoped we could continue our club’s great relationship.

The afternoon session consisted of 7 games of mixed club pairs in heavy rain on a now soggy green. This didn’t deter anyone from playing and despite the conditions some good bowling took place with humour and friendship overriding the Yorkshire weather!

We all assembled for a group photo, and bid our farewells until possibly, another meet up with Salts.

Thanks to everyone, players and supporters, who made the day enjoyable, memorable, and managed to produce some good bowling, despite the sometimes, atrocious conditions.

Robin

Addendum from the Captain of Salts B.C.

Morning Robin Hope you all arrived home safe and sound yesterday. What another super day of bowls and fun we had. Not even the lousy afternoon downpour could dampen our spirits. Thank you again for your very generous donation to SCGBC. It is very much appreciated. We would be very happy to return to Heversham BC in a year’s time if you think that would be something your members would enjoy again too? Keep rolling! Best regards Val and Martin

W.I. Shirley Askew Trophy

The W.I. Shirley Askew Trophy

On the evening of Wednesday July 2nd ladies from the Women’s Institute and the bowling club met for an enjoyable, fun-filled evening of bowling. Members of the W.I. were competing for the Shirley Askew Trophy. Fortunately the weather was pleasant, as was the Pimm’s which was provided, perhaps wisely, after the evening’s bowling.

Once again the winner from the W.I. was Glenys Weare, while Susan Ellis was the runner-up. From the bowling club the winner was Alison Warwick while the runner-up was Louise Tomlinson.

Below on the left you can see Glenys receiving the trophy and on the right Alison is receiving her prize.

The runners up below are Susan on the left and Louise on the right.
